Primary Functions:

1. Platforming Section catalytic reforming process to produce high octane gasoline blend stock.
2. Regeneration Section for continuous catalyst regeneration (CCR) of the Platforming process.

The Platforming Section of the process is used in petroleum refining to produce a high-octane gasoline blending product called Platformate (reformate) and a significant amount of hydrogen. The process is also a producer of C1, C2 and C3 that is used as fuel gas or HMU feed. Also produced is LPG (C4) that is used for Mogas blending or HMU feed. High pressure steam generated by heat recovery from furnace convection section is used within the refinery.

The Platforming section is designed with the capability to process 3,500 t/d of heavy naphtha that is tailored to produce a high octane Platformate with low benzene content, suitable for gasoline blending. The feed quality can be lean, rich or high in aromatic content to produce 3,130 t/d, 3,205 t/d or 3,225 t/d of Platformate, respectively. The Platformer can also be operated to process naphtha that contains native benzene and its precursors and produce Platformate with high benzene content. The Platformer was previously used in this mode of operation (Rating mode) to process 3,200 t/d of naphtha from the existing Naphtha Splitter C252 of the NHDT Unit 250. The naphtha feed, therefore, contains native benzene and its precursors and produce 2,880 t/d of Platformate. The product was routed to the Benzene Recovery Unit (BRU 5400) to reduce its benzene content before going to storage for gasoline blending.

The Regeneration section is designed to regenerate catalyst at a circulation rate of up to 1,000 lbs/hr (10.89 t/d) of catalyst between the two sections. The Platforming section can continue to operate independently for a limited time during short periods the regenerator is out of service for maintenance.
Each of the Platforming and Regeneration sections consist of four steps. Three steps of the Platforming section are to process hydrocarbons into products (Platformate, hydrogen and LPG). These are the reaction, recontacting and stabilization steps in the Platforming processing sequence. The fourth step is auxiliary to produce high pressure steam from waste heat of the fired heaters, for use within Unit 7200 with the balance being exported to the refinery. Catalyst Regeneration also occurs in four steps (coke burning, chlorination, drying and reduction). Each of the first three regeneration steps occurs in a different zone of the regeneration tower and the fourth and final step occurs in the reduction zone on
top of the Platforming reactors.
